There are no quick fixes. It's a process...
1) By word of mouth, an Angel working with Twinkles becomes aware of a struggling single mother—a Star— who could benefit from Twinkles’ help. The Angel connects with the Star mother to understand her feelings, facts, and the exact situation she is in. As much time as necessary is devoted to crystalize her desired outcomes, quantify her needs, and gain a thorough understanding of the challenges she’s facing. It is also ensured that the mother understands how Twinkles can and cannot be ready, willing, and able to help her turn her life around.
2) The Angel will double-check for an abusive relationship/ person in the Star’s circle who could convert the tangible help given to her into cash for their own nefarious reasons. Help given to the Star must be allowed to do just that and not end up—for instance—enabling substance abuse. And the foundation should not become a ‘home-breaker’, a reason for the Star to break up her family and leave her household. She must already be living separately for at least one year before the foundation will be able to help her.
3) The Angel will create a comprehensive case file of audio notes/ written narrative with facts, feelings, and pertinent information. A peer group of Angels will discuss the case to reach a collective conclusion about Twinkles’ ability to be of meaningful help to the Star. It could range from helping arrange an environment that allows her to focus on her employment instead of constantly worrying about her own and her children’s safety, gain employable skills, managing income and expenses, learning a trade, and getting regular emotional support. If the collective decision is that Twinkles cannot deliver, she will be informed by the Angel and provided with contacts of other organizations, such as medical providers etc. that may be able to help her.
4) If Twinkles can help in the turnaround, a Point Person is assigned to shepherd the case and they work with the Star to create a step-by-step plan of action. It will start with a 'boot camp' focused on her health, nutrition, physical fitness & self-defense, skills assessment, and cultivating new skills in line with her aptitude and goals—all in a safe environment. Periodically, successful cases that vividly illustrate what success looks like will check in with her, as will peer Angels. The Point will ensure the level of motivation, commitment, and grit in the Star continues to be sufficient to take her and her children through the uphill tasks of turning her life around. As the euphoria of planning fades and her consequential actions become the norm, success will depend upon not just the financial and emotional support provided by Twinkles but by the true grit of the Star.
5) Financial assistance will be provided not in cash but in delivering to her what’s needed at no cost to her. For instance, it could be buying her a sewing machine so she can start a micro business around tailoring, buying her lessons and tools for a micro business of hair cutting, or buying her a street cart and the first stock of produce at whole sale that she can retail.
6) Even after successful turnaround, Twinkles will check in periodically to ensure the Star hasn’t slipped back. She will be encouraged to pay back but instead of cash, ‘pay it forward’ to cases that Angels are working on.
7) Twinkles will only play a small role in the Star transitioning from incredible difficulties and despair to independence, self-sufficiency, self-respect, and dignity. The real credit belongs to the Star mother who made it happen.
